Project 1 - Scannergrams

Early photographers made photograms by placing objects with varying depths and translucencies on top of light sensitive paper before exposing it. In this project, you will be starting with a similar process, though replacing the photo paper with a flatbed scanner. You will make 10 scans of various objects (they can be personal objects, organic objects, random found objects) that have different depth and reflective traits.

After collecting your scans, you will combine parts of those images to form a self portrait. Be aware that a self portrait can easily become heavy handed. Avoid cliché, narration and exposition (and text). Embrace allusion, metaphor and juxtaposition and translation. You might use the small objects/ limited space of the scanner to try and create a grand vista. Your project might be wholly non representational, but with a strong sense of direction and asymmetrical balance.

Part 1
Familiarize yourself with the photoshop interface.
Download and save 20 images from the web. Make sure they are a good variety.
Recombine those images into 5 images, using every available pixel of the 20. Look for interesting ways to combine, for example, slicing two images vertically and alternating the strips. Look for elements and principles of design as you are making. Try some conceptual approaches as well.

Use: select tool, cut and paste, transform, layers
